You have 8 senses. Most founders only feed 2.

Most founders I work with are running on two senses.

Sight and hearing get hammered all day: screens, calls, Slack, podcasts on the drive in. The other six barely get a look in. Then we wonder why we're wired at 10pm and flat by 3pm.

You've probably heard there are five senses. Occupational therapists and sensory researchers work with eight. The extra three are internal, and they're the ones that quietly run your stress, recovery and long-term health.

Here's the full eight, and one simple founder move for each.

The outside four ๐Ÿ‘€

These shape your inputs: what your environment is feeding you.

The outside four senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste

1. Sight (visual). Get outside morning light within an hour of waking. Between meetings, look at the horizon, not another screen.

2. Hearing (auditory). Schedule silence. One notification-free block a day, and a walk with nothing in your ears.

3. Smell (olfactory). Pair one scent with one ritual, like eucalyptus for wind-down, so the cue does the work. Open a window.

4. Taste (gustatory). Eat lunch away from the desk and actually taste it. Slower meals, better signals, fewer 3pm crashes.

The inside four ๐Ÿซ€

These shape how you respond. This is where longevity actually lives.

The inside four senses: touch, vestibular, proprioception, interoception

5. Touch (tactile). Massage, compression, bare feet on sand or grass, a proper hug. Steady pressure helps you downshift.

6. Vestibular (balance). Your inner ear's sense of movement and orientation. Move in more than one direction: surf, swim, yoga, walking meetings. Balance is a skill you keep or lose.

7. Proprioception (body sense). Knowing where your body is in space without looking. Lift heavy things, train mobility, stand on one leg while you brush your teeth. Strength is awareness.

8. Interoception (inner sense). Your ability to read internal signals: heart rate, breath, hunger, temperature, fatigue. Sauna, cold plunge, breathwork. Feel your heart rate climb, then bring it back down. That's trainable calm.

Why interoception matters most for founders ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Most burnout doesn't arrive suddenly. The signals were there: tight chest, shallow breathing, skipped meals, bad sleep. We just stopped reading them.

Contrast therapy is one of the most direct ways I know to train this. In the sauna, your heart rate rises and you learn to sit with it. In the cold, you learn to slow your breath on purpose. Do that regularly and you get better at noticing stress early, and at bringing yourself back down, in the boardroom as well as the plunge.

Your 8-sense week audit โœ…

Run through the list on a Sunday. Did you feed each one this week?

8-sense weekly audit checklist
  • Sight: morning light, outside
  • Hearing: a block of real silence
  • Smell: a scent tied to a ritual
  • Taste: a meal away from a screen
  • Touch: massage, sand, a hug
  • Vestibular: moved off the straight line
  • Proprioception: lifted, stretched, balanced
  • Interoception: heat, cold or breath, on purpose

Two ticks is normal. Six is a good week. Eight is the goal.

The takeaway โ˜•

Your business runs on your energy. Feeding all eight senses isn't a wellness trend, it's maintenance on the most important asset you've got.

Save this, and send it to a founder running on two.
